It’s all too easy to succumb to a kitchen gadget, only for it to sit at the back of the kitchen cupboard for years. The best idea – especially when buying as a gift – is to keep it simple. I find that basic kitchen tools – like a good chef’s knife and a hand-held electric whisk – are the things I use most.

There is a worthy exception to this rule, however. My most recent gadget is a food dehydrator which I bought from Lakeland for £50.99. Although a bit over your £40 budget, it’s marvellous. It dries fruit, vegetables and more, intensifying their flavour, leaving you with a crisp (or ‘sun blushed’) product.

Ideal for using in cooking, to decorate your finished dishes or to eat as healthy crisps. It’s easy to use and provided you smear the slightest amount of vegetable oil on the racks before loading them up, it’s easy to clean too.

The government may explore next year the possibility of knocking zeroes off the country’s currency, Nadzeya Yermakova, head of the National Bank of Belarus (NBB), said during her last week’s visit to a kitchenware plant in Slutsk, Minsk region, BelaPAN said.

Ms. Yermakova predicted that conditions next year would likely be favorable for considering a change in the rubel’s denominations, news website said.

The NBB head also announced that the adoption of the Russian ruble by Belarus was not under consideration. The official said that she personally opposed the introduction of the Russian currency.
