News from Boston Globe:

We moved into our 1976 house in 2010 knowing that it was a fixer-upper and that we wouldn’t be able to tackle all of the problems at once. But we knew that the house was in good enough condition that we could certainly live in it while we made updates.

My foremost thought was the kitchen. The cabinets were original to the house, which meant they were nearly 40 years old. Unlicensed contractor ripped out kitchen cabinets then vanished with Boynton …
News from WPEC:

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Police are warning the public about an unlicensed contractor who ripped off an 89-year-old woman for $ 11,000 for a kitchen remodel that started but never got close to being finished.

Boynton Beach police report that Daniel Joseph Kovatch, 45, contracted with the victim to remodel her Northeast 20th Avenue kitchen in February. He tore out the kitchen cabinets and sink and then vanished.

Detectives say Kovatch moved from his last address, an apartment on Renaissance Commons Boulevard, around April 12.

Kovatch does not have a license to perform kitchen remodeling, electrical or plumbing work in Palm Beach County. He advertises as Kovatch Contracting Service on Yahoo and Angie’s List, and his website indicates he’s based in Hilton Head, S.C.

Detectives have filed charges against Kovatch with the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office for exploitation of the elderly, scheme to defraud, grand theft and contracting without a license.

Police urge the public to verify a contractor’s credentials before money is exchanged and work is started. In Palm Beach County, call the Contractors Certification Division at 561-233-5530.

Anyone with information about Kovatch is asked to call Boynton Beach police Detective Scott Caudell at 561-732-8116 or Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS.Unlicensed contra…………… continues on WPEC
