News from Washington Post:

District offers seniors a discount on trash can fees

The D.C. Department of Public Works recently began offering a senior citizens discount for trash cans. District residents age 60 and older can pay $ 30 for a Supercan used in once-a-week trash collection neighborhoods; $ 20 for the 32-gallon trash cans used in twice-a-week collection neighborhoods; and $ 20 for the blue recycling cans that are used citywide. Non-seniors will continue to pay $ 62.50 for a Supercan or $ 45 for a 32-gallon trash can or recycling bin.

In 2011, the Department of Public Works began charging residents for the 32-gallon trash cans and recycling cans, which had previously been offered for free. The department will continue to replace lids, bars and wheels on Supercans and the 32-gallon containers for free. Residents may pay for containers by check or money order payable to the D.C. Treasurer and mailed to the Department of Public Works, 2750 S. Capitol St. SE, Washington, DC 20032. The delivery address should be written on the payment. Residents should include proof of age, such as a photocopy of a driver’s license, passport or District-issued identification. Containers will be delivered within 10 business days of payment.
