Habitat for Humanity’s new ReStore in Detroit has bargains for remodelers

The lone stainless steel refrigerator was studied first by a handyman and then by a homeowner updating her kitchen.

Priced at $ 550, it was one of the most expensive items in the new Habitat for Humanity Detroit ReStore at 17181 Mack Ave. in Detroit. The store, with 7,000 square feet, is in the former Bob Maxey Lincoln Mercury used car lot just north of Cadieux on the Grosse Pointe border.

The store sells donated and new items at a fraction of retail prices found at home-improvement stores including Home Depot and Lowe’s. Roughly 30% of the items are new and 70% are used.

The new ReStore is already drawing a following from contractors to do-it-yourselfers trying to maintain or remodel underwater houses with the least expense possible. Remodeling activity is on the rise, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

“As more consumers remain in their homes rather than move in this economy, remodelers benefited from a gradual increase in home improvement activity, taking us to a five-year high,” said Bob Peterson, a remodeler from Ft. Collins, Colo., and chairman of the NAHB remodelers group.

Roger Reetz, 57, of Detroit, a handyman and licensed builder, visited the store Tuesday looking at the refrigerator for personal reasons — he is buying a house in Eastpointe that needs some work. Reetz said he’s really looking for some ch…………… continues on Detroit Free Press
