When Dennis and Avis Kreais finished remodeling their Dublin basement, they faced an unexpected problem.

The area that Dennis planned for his daily workouts was now too refined for his set of free weights.

“It turned out so nice I didn’t want to put my squat rack in here,” Dennis said.

So he moved a treadmill into the new space but left his weights in an adjacent unfinished room.

So far, that’s the only complaint with a remodeling project that added 1,200 square feet of finished space to the Kreais home.

The project is one of 15 renovations that will be open to visitors during next weekend’s Showcase of Remodeled Homes, a tour sponsored by the Building Industry Association of Central Ohio.

This year’s tour, like others in the past, is heavy on kitchen and bath projects, but the Kreaises’ renovation illustrates an increasingly popular way to add living space to a home at a modest cost.

Kathy Raab is busier than usual these days, getting ready for the Remodeled Homes Tour held every summer for the past 14 years in the Madison area by the local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

There are 15 homes on the June 3 tour so far, said Raab, executive director of NARI of Madison, with an always eclectic mix of entries including a two-story addition on one house, a kitchen remodel in an older home and a series of intricate renovations done inside a third house despite the challenges of a “chopped-up floor plan.”

Though perhaps not as well known as the bigger-budget Parade of Homes — held every year for newly built houses — the remodeled homes tour is a helpful aid for people considering changes to their existing homes, and for the contractors who hope to do that work, Raab said.
