PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — This time of year many people are thinking of doing some remodeling. Updating things like your kitchen or bathroom can actually be a smart investment. But in this week’s Angie’s List, Jim Donovan shows you why you need to be smart when it comes to doing any upgrades.

Remodeling your kitchen or bathroom won’t just make your home look nicer, it can be a great investment too.

“But the key here is not overdoing it, but keeping up with the Jones’s. So if you’re the only house in the neighborhood without granite countertops then it makes sense to add them, if you’re not, skip out on that extra,” said Angie’s List founder, Angie Hicks.

The best way to make sure your home improvement job goes smoothly, make a clear plan.

“Plan ahead. Lay out your budget. Have ideas ahead of time and then communicate with your contractor regularly. That starts with the estimate, documenting in the contract, all the way through the entire project,” said Hicks.

Any major renovation can end up being very expensive so be smart when it comes to arranging payments.

“The one thing consumers should remember is that the payment schedule on a remodel job is a negotiable item. Be comfortable with how the payments are going to work. Typically what happens is payments are tied to certain hurdles. Make sure…………… continues on CBS Local

Home remodeling show returns for 34th year
News from Thousand Oaks Acorn:

The 34th Conejo Valley Home Remodeling Show will display the latest ideas for home remodeling and outdoor projects on Sat. and Sun., April 21 and 22 at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza, 880 S. Westlake Blvd., Westlake Village.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

More than 170 vendors from Ventura County and the west San Fernando Valley will exhibit at the show.

Exhibits will showcase kitchen and bath remodeling, interior designs, landscaping, pools and spas, as well as energy-efficient products such as skylights, solar heating and tankless water heaters.

New this year is a “Take Back Your Nights!” event hosted by the Sleep Shoppe of Agoura Hills and Newbury Park. The Sleep Shoppe will display more than 10 types of beds for people to try in a tent just outside the main show.

The first 200 people each day will get in free. Free passes are available online at www.conejovalleyhomeshow.com. The cost at the door is $ 4.
